Bear Kill The Pennsylvania Game Commission reported that hunters harvested 3,063 bears during the three-day bear-hunting season last month. This total is 12 short of last year's record-setting kill. Prisoner escape Richard Sears, who authorities label as very dangerous, escaped from a police car while in transit to the Public Safety Building in Johnstown. Even though two constables were in the car with him, the prisoner managed to open the back door and run away to freedom. Allowing prisoners to escape has happened several times during the past year. Constables have been given specific instructions on how to handcuff and manacle prisoners but it seems they are not following through. This becomes a matter of public safety when a dangerous felon is trying to evade capture. Zoning The Jackson Township Supervisors approved the zoning ordinances this past week amidst taunts, jeers, and threats of lawsuits. Supervisor-elect Robert Stephens has filed a lawsuit and promised to call for a repeal of the ordinances as soon as he takes office in January. The supervisors also appointed members to a zoning hearing board and approved a $1.72 million budget for the coming year. There will be no increase in taxes to meet the budget. Cheerleading trophies The Blacklick Valley Junior High cheerleaders have come home with three first-place trophies in the past three months. The girls practiced hard all summer and worked even harder to raise money to meet their expenses. They have dreams of moving on to be senior-high champs. Amnesty The Nanty Glo Library offered amnesty on December 20 and 21 to anyone with overdue library books. Although most people are diligent about returning books on time, a few have had books out since 1998. The library has the legal right to take offenders to the magistrate, but it is thought that amnesty is the better way to resolve the problem of overdue books. Weather Temperatures dropped enough by Thursday morning to freeze rain and snow on the roads and brought out the ash and salt trucks. Rains earlier in the week helped alleviate the drought conditions. |

The communion of saints; how shall I explain it to you? You know what a blood transfusion does for the body? Well that's what the communion of saints does for the soul." Blessed
