David Caldwell's weekly roundup
of news affecting Blacklick Valley

The 2000 Census showed that Pennsylvania had a population decline. The US Constitution mandates that each member of the House of Representatives serve an equal number of citizens. To comply with the Constitution, Pennsylvania will lose two of its 21 members of the House. It is up to the state legislators, both House of Representatives and Senate, to draw up new district boundaries in order to eliminate two members of the House. One of the tentative plans could prove harmful to our area. It would pit longtime Democratic Representative John P. Murtha against another popular Democratic Representative from Washington County.

During his long tenure in the House, Representative Murtha has funneled many jobs and grants to Somerset and Cambria Counties. As a ranking member of the Defense Appropriation Committee, he has brought a number of defense contracts and contractors to this area. He has won support for industry, conservation, environment and education. Although state politicians draw redistricting boundaries, many Republicans and Democrats would not like to see Rep. Murtha's House seat put in jeopardy because of his service record on behalf of this area and the state of Pennsylvania.

School board

The Blacklick Valley School Board reelected Arthur Wurm as president and Carrie Mourey as vice president at its annual reorganization meeting on December 5. Mr. Wurm has already served three-and-a-half years as board president.

Some of the Blacklick Valley's older citizens move to warmer parts of the country during the colder months. Those who have already left missed a beautiful fall. Just this week we had temperatures as high as 60 degrees. It feels like spring. With such a warm fall, winter is going to be tougher on us.

Nanty Glo Borough held an auction yesterday to bid off the relics and remnants of the former Nanty Glo Hotel on Shoemaker Street. Mayor Cunningham has broken a tie vote that would allow the Cambria County Redevelopment Authority to let out bids and pay for the demolition of the building. The Authority says that it could have the building down by next June.

Some want the Borough to go ahead with the demolition of the building on its own for fear the structure will collapse during the winter. The Borough engineer is going to make a structural analysis of the building's integrity.

Worst jokes (third in a series)

A man rushed into the doctor's office and shouted, "Doctor! I think I'm shrinking!"

The doctor calmly responded, "Now, settle down. You'll just have to be a little patient."

Advent thought for the day

As Christians, we would agree completely with those who say that without God man is a zero. But the difference with Christians is that we believe that God is the big ONE before the zero. And, as we know, it is the ONE before the zero that gives it worth. Christ is the ONE who makes me something. Without the ONE and only God, I am nothing.
