of news affecting Blacklick Valley

Sewer rate increase

The Nanty Glo Sewer Authority has voted to increase the monthly sewage rate from a flat $21 per month to a base rate of $25 for the first 4,000 gallons of water used, then an additional $6.30 for each 1,000 gallons used above the base 4,000 gallons. It is believed this method of billing will generate more income for the authority and place the extra cost on those who make a greater use of the sewage system. The increased revenue will allow the authority to pay down debts, maintain the current lines and provide funds for additional needed repairs. Although the Nanty Glo Sewer and Water Authorities are cooperating in the billing process, the bills will be sent out separately. They hope to eventually combine the two in order to cut the expenses of both authorities.

The rate increase will also effect some Jackson Township residents who are connected to the Nanty Glo sewer system.

More jobs cut in August

Best Form announced that it would move its approximately 100 local office jobs to Atlanta. Now the company has given the area additional bad news. Beginning in February, the company will close its manufacturing plants in Johnstown and Windber and greatly curtail the work at its distribution points in Sidman and the Johnstown Industrial Park. The move will cause an additional 600 people to lose their jobs.

Lower budget

The Jackson Township Supervisors have submitted a lower budget for the next fiscal year. The proposed $1,725,311 figure is $21,500 less than the current budget. The final vote will occur at the December 20 meeting.

The Nanty Glo Beautification Committee met with borough council at the November 28 meeting to ask for help in curbing vandalism to the Christmas decorations they have placed in the community. The committee, composed entirely of elderly women, puts in a lot of time, effort, and money to improve the appearance of the borough. Someone has been damaging the decorations and causing the ladies to make repeated repairs and replacement of decorations. Mayor Cunningham has already asked borough police to keep a closer watch on the decorated areas. Council offered to post a $100 reward for information that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of vandals.

Walking into a bar one night, a man yelled out, "Who's the strongest in here?"

A huge man stands up and thumps his own chest. "I am the strongest!"

"Great!" the first man said. "Can you help me push my car to the gas station?"

Advent thought for the day

You must always be prepared when you set sail. Even if you see calmness all around, you must expect to be confronted with a storm of temptations and tribulations. Tribulations often bring us to a better spiritual state. Besides, God is mysterious in His >ways.
