The Kelly Clan of Jackson Township

This photo from 1908 or 1909 shows the Kelly Clan in a farm on Jackson Township, off today's Route 22 between Mundys Corner and Chickaree Mountain. In the center front is the matriarch, Jane McClung McGuigan Kelly, who was born Jane McClung in County Clare, Ireland, around 1820.

Jane McClung came to the United States at age 13, hoping to find a brother who had preceded her to the new world. She was unsuccessful in her search, but worked in New York for five years before returning to Ireland where she married James McGuigan. They had a boy and a girl and were expecting a third baby when they came to America. The third child, Catherine, was born either on the ship en route or shortly after arriving in America. They are believed to have settled around South Fork. James worked for the railroad and died young, leaving Jane with three young children to raise. She met John Kelly, who also worked for the railroad and was from County Clare, Ireland. They were married about 1852 and became the parents of eight children, four sons and four daughters:

  • Peter, October 11, 1853, died 1929
  • James, January 4, 1856, died January 27, 1901
  • William, August 9, 1858, died May 2, 1937
  • Patrick, May 15, 1861, died 1927
  • Anna, July 25, 1863, died February 18, 1950
  • Margaret, September 18, 1865, died at a young age
  • Elizabeth Jane, June 26, 1868
  • Clara Agnes, April 27, 1871, died November 1, 1942.

In the 1880 census, John and Jane Kelly listed their ages as 60. John died of pneumonia in Jackson Township on his farm on November 27, 1894. He was buried in Holy Name Cemetery in Ebensburg on November 29. Jane died in Jackson Township on the farm on August 14, 1910, and also was buried in Holy Name Cemetery, though neither of their graves are marked.

Jane's children from her first marriage were John, who married Mary Rager; Mary, who married a George James, and Catherine, who married a Leonard Litzinger. Catherine had two children, Anna Jane and Milton, and died shortly after the birth of Milton, after which both of her children were raised by their grandparents, Jane and John Kelly. Milton was still living on the farm with his grandmother when he married in 1897.

Above, matriarch Jane Kelly is flanked by, to the left, clockwise, Anna, Peter, William, Clara, Patrick, and Elizabeth. The photo was taken in 1909.

Below, Clara (standing center above) is surrounded by her family, the Dunmires, on their family farm outside Vintondale, in a 1918 photo. They are, front row: Martha, Leo, William, Clara (with little Mary in front), William (Jr.?) and Gilbert. Back row: Margaret, Albert, and Lawrence.

These photos and information were supplied by a great-grandson of Jane Kelly,
Bob McCulloch, of Los Altos, California (near San Jose).
