Nanty Glo Home Page webmaster's world tour site referenced in major online travel encyclopedia
An Internet worldwide web site detailing an around-the-world trip taken in 1996 by two former Blacklick Valley brothers has been referenced in a letter published yesterday by Arthur Frommer's Outspoken Encyclopedia of Travel, one of the Internet's leading travel resources.
Jon Kennedy's letter to Frommer's Encyclopedia said:Dear Mr. Frommer,
I greatly enjoy and appreciate your daily vacation letter. It helps keep me dreaming.
My brother and I recently ('96) did a round-the-world tour of our own planning on a $50-a-day land budget. (Though some days were higher, the average actually came in below that.) Any of your readers who might be interested can see all the details online at www.svtoday.com/svt/wrldtour.htm.
Many happy departures,
Frommer publicized the letter in his daily email news update for the encyclopedia, which goes to an extensive mailing list. He jokingly referred to Kennedy's site as "possible competition" with his own. Frommer became famous as the author of the Europe on Five Dollars a Day books which were best sellers in the 1960's.
Jon and his brother Bob visited 10 cities in 21 days in the May 1996 tour: London, Dublin, Paris, Budapest, Frankfurt, Zurich, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Delhi/New Delhi, and Hong Kong. The web site gives details not only of the sites visited but a breakdown of the expenses of each day. Jon Kennedy said he created the site because one he had visited earlier in his trip planning had been "hit" some 300,000 times, and he thought it would enhance his web publishing business. That kind of traffic never materialized for his $50-a-day site, however. In fact, he said, Frommer's publicity might draw the first sizeable traffic to the site since it was put online a year and a half ago.
Bob Kennedy attended the former Vintondale High School from 1943-46, graduating from Ebensburg-Cambria High School in 1957. Jon Kennedy attended the former Blacklick Township public schools for 12 years, graduating in 1960. Robert and his wife, Lois, now live in Goshen, Ind., and Jon lives in San Jose, Calif. Robert is retired; Jon is a technical writer with a software development company. He has dabbled in travel writing all his adult life, with stories on Cambria County published in travel sections of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Detroit News, and Los Angeles Times. A travel guide of Cambria County that he published while editor of the Nanty Glo Journal won him the a Keystone Press Award in 1964. He also edited and rewrote a travel book for the Pennsylvania Electric Company covering all the counties served by Penelec at that time, in 1963.
