Trying to find the group that recorded “The Nanty Glo Polka” was no easy task. The original recording group was called the PANEKS, but they are no longer in existence.

Checking with many of the polka-loving folks in Nanty Glo, I was given a number of leads. After phone calls to Joe in Portage and Bill and Deb in Mineral Point, it was Mario in Lilly who finally gave me the solid information I was looking for. “Call Stan Galant of Altoona,” Mario said, “he should know.” I promptly made the call.

Mr. Stan Galant is currently with a band called The HALLMARKS from Altoona who play '50’s, '60’s, Big Band, Polkas, and anything in between. When I mentioned I was with the Nant-Y-Glo Tri Area Museum and Historical Society and we were looking for information on “The Nanty Glo Polka,” he said. “Oh, Nanty Glo, yes we did it. The ‘Nanty Glo Polka’ was on our album, but we were called the PANEKS at the time.” BINGO!

He went on to share that Mr. Frank Hermanski wrote the “Nanty Glo Polka” when he was the drummer for the PANEKS. “When Frank told us he was going to write a polka about Nanty Glo, we just kind of laughed. But he said, ‘They will love it’ and they sure did. It was a real hit and after all this time we still play it.” I asked if there was a copyright on the song he said “yes.” But when I asked if the Historical Society would be able to play the song during the Nanty Glo Homecoming, he said. “Yes, play it as much as you like.”

      HOMECOMING IS JULY 7

So folks, you will have an opportunity to hear the recording of this very old polka at the tent of the Nant-Y-Glo Tri Area Museum & Historical Society, set up at the Nanty Glo Park and Pool on Saturday July 7th for the Homecoming.

      Come join us.
