Big changes completed at Belsano
Updated August 28, 2002
The former "Y" intersection of Pennsylvania Route 271 and US Route 422 at Belsano has been turned into a "T," shown above with the work now completed. The New Triangle Restaurant is seen at left and the former Cities Service gas station is beyond. The former C&I Railroad overpass over U.S. Highway 422 (Benjamin Franklin Highway) at Belsano has been replaced by a much wider pedestrian overpass, shown above left, completed. The view at right shows the work when it was in its early stages. The pedestrian overpass is the first phase of construction of an extension of the Rails to Trails system in Blacklick Township. The current, completed, portion of former C&I railways that has been turned into a trail is the Ghost Town Trail from Nanty Glo to Dilltown via Vintondale, and from Vintondale to Red Mill. April 26 report: The face of "greater Belsano" has been forever changed. Gone is the former C&I Railroad overpass across Route 422 (Benjamin Franklin Highway) and gone also is the elevated right of way for the overpass. A new overpass across the highway for a planned extension of the rails-to-trails path is under construction, as shown in the first photo below, left, and the former railroad bed as it appears now, before improvement, is shown in the sixth photo, in the right column. The six photos in color, by Judy Rose, show the work in progress. Below them, an old photo, date uncertain (first quarter of 20th Century?), shows work as it was underway when the C&I underpass was originally created. For more on that construction, click here. The underpass was the site of an accident taking three lives of teenagers in 1957 (story here). Click any of the photos for an enlarged view in a new browser window.
