Memories of a visit to Nantyglo

Letter No. 1 | November 7, 1999

Greetings, I ran across your web page, and recalled some fond memories of Nantyglo.

In late December 1977 and early January 1978 I had the privilege of touring England and Wales as a member of the Lousiana Governor's XV and we visited Nantyglo and played Nantyglo RFC. We were made up mostly of players from Louisiana State University (LSU), with other mates from New Orleans joining in.I remember we stayed one night in Tredegar, and were hosted another night by rugby club players and supporters. We were told we were the first foreign team to visit Nantyglo. Because the pitch at the club was being reseeded, we played on a secondary pitch just up the road.

After the match, which was won by Nantyglo, we had the opportunity to be treated to a wonderful party at the Miner's Welfare Hall. Our tour was 2 weeks long, we played 5 matches, but the time we were shown in Nantyglo was by far the best.
