Old age is when You forget names.... But it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!

I hate all the gods, and I hate them because they do not recognize Man as Supreme Divinity.

JONAL ENTRY 1273 | March 31 2013

. . . And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven."

— from Mark 2,
from today's lenten Orthodox
lectionary readings

Diary: Yesterday I took the bus into center city to do more shopping. All the best intentions of getting cured of acquisitiveness seem to fallen by the wayside when I'm trying to get comfortable in my new home. Now I assure myself this will last only until I get settled. Then I'll hate shopping as I did in San Jose. But how much will it take to make me "comfortable." Yesterday's bigget purchase was a double-bed duvet (a European version of a quilt), which I decided I needed because a single-bed duvet, even though my bed is a single, isn't wide enough to keep from riding up and off parts of me when I roll over.

Meanwhile, today's video is one I took at Victoria Square. Belfast has many large shopping centers (even one named Kennedy Center), but Victoria Square may be the most modern and architecturally interesting. I was saying at the beginning (somehow my first words got omitted by the camera) that I had been here with my host while in Belfast two years earlier. But now it is more finished and I got to tour it in freezing temperatures.

At coffee hour after church today I met a new acquaintance, Trevor Buchanan, who offered to take me on a tour of some of the local landmarks. The following picture is one of me helping a young C.S. Lewis look into his wardrobe to see whether there are any other worlds in there. The sculpture is in front of the Hollywood Arches library, which is the public site closest to the Lewis family residences in the great author/saint's lifetime.

Today's Scripture is one that apparently has been preached in the Orthodox Church on the second Sunday of lent for over a thousand years. Our pastor said that Gregory Palamas (1296-1359) preached on it, and likened the man having the roof opened so he could be dropped down into the house to be healed by Jesus to anyone who opens his or her heart to let the Holy Spirit come in to heal our souls. The crowd in the house he compared with the many distractions of life that try to crowd out all inclinations toward caring for our spiritual lives. We must be equally clever and determined to not let the crowd keep us from our goal.
